Sonu Nigam: Biography

On May 17, in Jetpur (Gujarat, India) a boy was born in the family of zamindars.

  • He was smart in studies and was equally attracted to the sound of music.
  • At the age of eleven he sang 'Ae Mere Watan Ke Logon' in front of a mammoth crowd, winning applause.
  • Determined to succeed, he continued his struggle and ultimately, found his destiny…Ghazals.
  • Begum Akhtar and Mehndi Hasan became his idols; Urdu his language and Ghazals his life.
  • He did his first Ghazal concert in 1978 and since then has traveled to every country of the world, performed in every prestigious auditorium on the planet and has had the privilege to entertain the world's most renowned people.
  • He released his first album 'Aahat' in 1980 and since then has released more then 50 albums, the last being 'Shaayar' He himself has lost count of the number of compilations that are afloat in the music market.
  • His film song 'Chithi Aayee Hai' from 'Naam' has brought tears in the eyes of every music lover around the globe.
  • He produced a talent hunt show for Sony TV called 'Aadab Aarz Hai' bringing many new talented ghazal singers in front of the audience.

Pankaj Udhas – A Socially Conscious Citizen
Not many know of the fact that behind the velvet voice singer Pankaj Udhas lives a gentle, soft-spoken, light-hearted and a concerned citizen of India. The Ghazal Maestro has been associated with the social field for more than two decades now and is actively involved in doing charity and social work for the Cancer Patients Aid Association, Parents Thalassemia Unit

In 1989 Pankaj Udhas released the album 'Nabeel', which went on to become one of his best selling albums. The first copy of the album was placed at an auction where it was sold for as high as Rs. 1 Lakh. The money was donated to the Caner Patients Aid Association.

In his 20 years of social association Pankaj Udhas has done numerous concerts to raise funds for social causes. He has collected lakhs of rupees and donated the same towards charitable causes.

Way back in the mid-80s, Udhas was instrumental in starting a movement called 'Khazana – A Festival of Ghazals' where top ghazal singers of the industry would perform to collect funds for social causes. The festival was discontinued for some reasons but in 2002, Udhas again took the initiative and revived the festival. Held at the Oberoi Hotel, Mumbai every year, Khazana is a huge hit every year. In the last six years this festival has collected more then Rs 3 crores for the Cancer Patients Aid Association & the Parents Thalassemia Unit Trust.Udhas now intends to take Khazana to other cities and maybe other countries also.

In June 2005 & 2006 he organised a golf tornament titled Khazana Golf Tornament in aid of cancer patients and thalassemic children in Nashville Tennessy in the United States and collected 1 lac and 46 thousand Usdollars.] after the success of this tournament it has been decided to make it an annual event

For his outstanding contribution in the field of Ghazal Singing and social service President of India conferred the "Padma Shri" Award to him on29th March 2006 at Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi
